Fire Safety Codes

Each state has a government department as well as fire department that is responsible for protecting its inhabitants from fire. The state will develop a fire safety code, which places regulations and restrictions on various issues pertaining to fire prevention. The fire department will help make and carry out these rules so that everyone is kept safe. Sadly, when fire safety codes are violated, it can put you and your loved ones in danger.

There are several common areas that fire safety codes across different states regulate. First, you may have noticed occupancy limits for commercial buildings such as restaurants. After an inspection, a state official will place the occupancy limit on the building so that in case of a fire, everyone has the best chance of escaping the building. Additionally, there are rules that the building must follow such as amount and placement of emergency exits. For instance, restaurants must be careful to not place any tables in front of an emergency exit.

Next, a fire safety standards will typically regulate the amount of times that buildings must be inspected. Often, the code will require highly populated or oft-frequented structures to have at least one inspection per calendar year. This applies to things like university lecture halls, hotels and motels, etc. Also, these types of buildings will have to have plenty of smoke detectors and sometimes even carbon monoxide detectors.

Although the fire department can help make fire prevention regulations, the state will also create several requirements of the firefighters. This can include participation in national fire prevention week, teaching schools proper fire safety, and other community work. Also, many states require fire departments to report any fire incidences within a certain period of time.

Smoke detectors, fire escapes, and emergency exits are but a few of the things that property owners can utilize to keep guests and visitors safe from fire. However, if a premises owner fails to follow fire safety code, it can put you in danger of serious injuries such as burns and smoke inhalation should you be present for a fire.
